Aims and scope:

This intensive course provides an advanced introduction to online teaching in international higher education. The course is intended for experienced teachers with a PhD or equivalent and a minimum of three years of teaching experience in higher education. Therefore, the course will not spend time on general aspects of teaching in higher education, but focus instead on the specifics of teaching online and the opportunities this offers for international relations and outreach.

The course covers all main aspects of online teaching in international environments. It starts by setting up your studio, where you will learn about internet connections, cameras, lighting, capture cards, microphones, monitors, computers, desk management, and all things related to hardware you will need to excel in online teaching. The second part of the course deals with managing students, and discusses all the software that can help you manage your relation with them, from video-conferencing and online learning platforms to content management systems you can use to build your own website. The third part of the course will introduce you to livestreaming and how to use social networks to promote your teaching beyond your class. The fourth part of the course will introduce you to the opportunities that online teaching offers in international higher education, from internatinal collaboration to international students and international sources of funding.

By the end of the course, you should be able to deliver your first lecture online to your students, discuss with them by video conference, invite a guest lecturer, livestream your lecture on Youtube or Facebook, assess student progress and measure student satisfaction by using online methods.

This is an intensive course in which you will be part of a reduced class of up to 15 participants. There will be five daily one-hour video conferences plus online coursework assignments. At the end of the course, you will have to present a capstone project in which you will apply and demonstrate all you have learned throughout the course. After successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of proficiency in online teaching in international higher education. There are limited scholarships available for teachers at partner institutions of the EUROSCI Network.
